| Take one of your three-way connections from our Socratic Seminar and write a clear paragraph that shows how the three elements go together.
I look forward to reading your ideas here. | |

| The three way connection that i made was David Copperfield, Books, and Wanting a better life. I saw this when he was locked in his room for the most part, but also during other parts of the book. He talk about what it would be like to be such-and-such a person in such-and-such a place having adventure. Charles Dickens seems to revisit the idea of D.C.'s books through different points of his childhood, but it seems as if he has moved on from writing about them. | |

| My three-way connection was between Aunt Betsey (4), donkeys (23), and power is what counts (4). Obviously, Aunt Betsey Trotwood has an ongoing rivalry with the children of the neighborhood who are constantly riding donkeys on her lawn. Most people connect this to Aunt Betsey obsession for neatness but I believe it is a sign of power. If Aunt Betsey allows the children to ride donkeys on her lawn, they would be able to committ worse atrocities against her property. By establishing authority over the children in the neighborhood she makes sure that they do not feel comfortable trespassing on her house. I interpret Aunt Betsey's attack on the donkeys as an establishment of neighborhood authority, rather that obession over her beautiful lawn. | |

| My three way connection was: 24.Mr. Spenlow>?.The Docters Common>24.Inflexibility. This is because although Mr. Spenlaw says that he'd be more lenient if he could, he most likely uses Mr. Jorkins to justify his inflexibility. Mr. Spenlaw really doesn't ever give David a break, even when it's for his aunt. | |

| The connection that I made was Clara Peggotty(3), buttons(13), and a heart of gold(16). The connection that I made between thes three things was that Peggotty at one point very early in the book has buttons that fall off her coat, they fall off when she hugs David very tightly. Her heart of gold is another way of saying that she loves David and always has. Even when Daivd's own mother could do nothing to help him even if she wanted to, Peggotty stood up for him. In the end however that cost Peggotty her job she did it anyway. -Lyndsie Bernard --Period 6 | |

| The Three-way connection I made was Auunt Betsey, Donkeys, and the World is a hard, evil place/ state of experience. I made these connections because Aunt Betsey is alot like donkeys, she is not afraid to confront people, like the donkeys aren't afraid to tresspass, but she is also very terrified all at the same time. And through her experiences, she learns that the world is a hard, evil place and that she has to try and make the best of it by seeing, understaing, and doing what is right. | |

| The connection i chose was 5-7-4 Mr. Murdstone, Murdstones factory, power is what counts. I chose this connection because Mr. Murdstone had the power to send David off to the factory because his mother died. David had noone to turn to and he had to listen to Edward because he was his only guardian he had. | |

| The connection I made consisted of Mr. Mell (18), the flute (17)/ Salem House (2), and goodness prevails (1)/dealing with change in life (23). For starters, Mr. Mell is obviously linked to the flute and Salem House as the flute was the instrument that he played for his mother in her home while he was transporting David to Salem House, where he was to be David's teacher. Furthermore, I associate Mr. Mell with the goodness prevails/ dealing with change in life is because even when David had leaked Mr. Mell's deepest and darkest secret that he came form a poor family, he was not angry at David, even though it ended up with him (Mr. Mell) losing his job. Consequently, I associate Mr Mell(o) with these two themes because even in times of hardship he is able to keep strong, kind, and forever moving forward. All in all, I find Mr. Mell to probably be one of the kindest characters in David Copperfield due to his unchangeable spirit and attitude. | |

| The three way connection I made was Mr. Murdstone, Jane Murdstone, and Betsey Trotwood, (4-5-6), at Aunt Betsey's house, (4), and the theme "power is what counts," (4). After the Murdstones were informed that David had run away to Betsey Trotwood's house, they go to retrieve him. However, when the Murdstones crossed Betsey's property, they lost all of their power and influence. Betsey was able to out-power the Murstones, and Betsey was able to keep David. | |

| One of the connections i made was with, Steerforth, Salem House, and not satisfied with life. I chose Salem House as the place/object because it is where David first met Steerforth. I then chose, not satisfied with life, because Steerforth mentioned that he is not as happy as people may think he is. He believes that if he had a father figure to look over him as he grew up, that he would be a stronger man and more worthy of what he has. | |

| One of my connections were Uriah Heep, Books, and Survival of the Fitttest. Uriah Heep is a "umble" person, but he wants to move up in the world, so he reads books. He gets educated about the law business and becomes partners with Mr. Wickfield eventually. Mr. Wickfield was weak and Uriah Heep was strong, so Uriah Heep rose up. Heep wanted a better life probably so he worked hard and eventually became partners with Mr. Wickfield. | |

| The connection I chose was 14-2-10 (James Steerforth-Salem House-appearences vs. reality). At Salem House, Steerforth seemed like a nice, good-looking guy who everybody loved and wanted to be friends with. Unfortunately, David, along with Mr. Peggotty and the rest of his family, fell into that trap and realized later what a backstabbing cheater he really is when he runs away with Little Em'ly. | |

| My Connection would be David Copper Field, Road to Dover, and The world is a hard an evil place because David was robbed after leaving to Dover and had to travel by foot 75 miles to Dover selling bits and pieces of his clothing until left with pants and a jacket. He does this on his own and no one helps him, he is looked down upon by the people and must go without the aid of someone else. He is alone. | |

| One of the combinations i chose was to put together Mrs. Gummidge, the boathouse at Yarmouth, and both not fitting in, and dealing with changes in life. I placed her at Yarmouth because that is her home and that is where David meets her. She constantly is talking about how she doesn't fit in in the family and how she is bringing everyone down with her depression and sadness. She reckognizes that she doesn't fit in because she can't deal with the change that occured in her life (the second half of the theme). She has not yet found a way to cope with her husband's death at sea and that is why she is depressed so often and knows that she is bringing the happy family's morale down. | |

| I conected Mrs. Gummidge, the boathouse at Yarmouth, and not fitting in. This is because, Mrs. Gummidge always isolates herself from society, and forces herself not to fit in. Shes just a miserable person, who has no intention of ever going back into the world. She's basically waiting for her life, because she has nothing left to live for. She'll be forever ever seperateed from society, consantly not fritting in. | |

| I connected Mr. Micawber to downtown London and to this appearance vs. reality theme. You are introduced to Micawber and he is a very nice person you see him as always being jovial and jolly and he is just always convincingly happy. Yet behind this man who seems to be very bright and seems to have potential there is failure. He looks as if he would be capable of getting an honest job and living a fine life but he really is just losing in his life, just always in debt and in financial ruin. | |

| I made a connection between three major assets in this novel. David Copperfield, Mr. Murdstone's Factory, and survival of the fittest. Mr. and Mrs. Murdstone sent David to work at Mr. Murdstone's Factory after Clara Copperfield died, because they didn't want to look after him. He soon realized that it was very difficult to fend for himself. This is why i connected this to survival of the fittest. He had to survive on his own, and it was not easy. | |

| I did Mr. Dick with the Charles Head and imprisonment since though Mr. Dick is out living in the world, not being locked up, he's still imprisoned in his mind with his "Insanity". | |

| I connected Mr. Murdstone, Nice clothes, and Power is what counts. Throughout the story, we begin to see what Mr. Murdstone's real intentions with Mrs. Copperfield are. He is just looking for a young gullible mind that he can mold and control. After her death, we meet Mr. Murdstone again, and it turns out that he is getting married again to another young woman with money that he can form into his own. Power is all that counts to him. | |

| In this activity I connected Aunt Betsey, Aunt Betsey's cottage, and state of experience. The first time she knew that David was a boy, she was disgusted and wanted nothing to do with him. This was based on her past experiences with men. Later on, she warms up to him and learns to love him for who he is. By learning to love David, her experience with men has changed a little bit. | |

| I made a three-way connection between Martha Endell, the graveyard, and the theme "the world is a hard, evil place." (21-20-20) Martha's last name Endell sounds like "end all" and reminds me of death and graveyards. I also connected this to "the world is a hard, evil place" because we see that Martha tries to commit suicide because she doesn't want to live anymore. | |

| I connected Agnes Wickfield, her piano, and "Eternal Friendship", because throughout the book, I saw Agnes as David' hidden guardian. The piano produces music, and it represents her purity of heart and carefree soul, and the theme of "Eternal Friendship" relates to her fidelity to David. She tells David that Steerforth is his bad angel, and through her actions and concerns, we can infer that she is his good angel. Even in times when David does not believe her judgement entirely, she still stands by his side, waiting for him to realize the truth in her judgement. | |

| One of the connections I prepared was Emily, the sea, and the world is a hard, evil place. Emily has lost many people she loved to sea related deaths. Emily’s parent both drowned and many other of her family member have lost their lives to the sea. Emily lives with the Peggotty family on the ocean where there is no escaping the power of the ocean. Water is a defiant symbol that both rejuvenates and destroys. Through Emily’s eyes the sea represents a hard, evil place. | |

| My three way connection was Mr. Peggoty, fish and lobsters, and the theme of the man with a heart of gold. Mr. Peggoty's job is fishing for lobsters since he is a man living near the sea. He is the man with a heart of gold because he has been helping everyone out. He helped his nieces and nephews and even a lonely widow. Mr. Peggoty is just a really nice person. | |

| One of the three way connections I made was David Copperfield, Locked Bedrooms, and the world is a hard, evil place. I made this connection because I thought the scene, at the beginning of the novel, where Mr. Murdstone locks David in his bedroom had a powerful impact on David. This was because when David was stuck by himself he realized, by reading his father's books, that the world is a hard, evil place, and that his destiny could be what ever he wanted, but he would have to work for it all on his own.
